With undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard in the US and Oxford in the UK, and regarded as one of the most interesting, entertaining, exciting, engaging new voices in contemporary art, American Neo-Pop artist Jan Larsen’s multi-media work reflects on the mores of our pasts and points to the promise of our future, commenting precisely on the tenors of our time, and presciently on our unique place in human history.

“Each moment of human history is indeed the most interesting and exciting time to be alive.  From our Western perspective, witnessing the leading lights of the Renaissance in Italy, the ensuing Enlightenment flashing its brilliance across Europe, the prescience of such poets as Wordsworth, Whitman, and countless artists of talent since, noting the observations of historian Alexis de Tocqueville and chroniclers of all persuasions throughout our histories, applying valid post-modern reasoning and prescience from philosophy and fine art from the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, we can indeed reasonably conclude that it just gets better and better, and ever-more-intricate, interesting, and challenging at that, as we go.”

Born to a successful conservative American family in the American Midwest amid the 1967 hippie movement’s ‘Summer of Love,’ Jan began his schooling as part of a cultural-integration program at a predominantly African-American school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He proceeded through the American public school system to earn his undergraduate degree from Harvard, and a Master’s degree from Oxford University in England.

In 1997, Jan moved to New York City to complete what he calls “an inquiry into the character, history, and living, breathing, Beuys-style experiential-sculpture nature of the professional practice of fine art.”

Starting and building-up four brick-and-mortar galleries under his name in the downtown New York City, the historic heart of American contemporary art from 2000 to 2015, representing scores of artists, producing hundreds of exhibitions, and loaning works in partnership with the US State Department as part of its Art In Embassies programme, Jan built JLA into a global fine art practice.

Along the way, he educated himself in art history, and learned the hands-on tools of the fine art art, while refining and choosing his own approach.

Since launching his solo career in 2015, Jan’s work has spoken to his American experience, responded to world events, and as the world has become more of am inmter-connected ‘global village,’ reflected on the quality of each of our contemporary moments, world-wide.

In 2019, ready to expand his work to Asia, Jan began setting up his new home-base and production studios in Singapore, and having made it through the COVID crisis and other problematic trends in our shared world, he is delighted to present and be joined in this work by collectors, artists, and for-profit, charitable, and governmental institutional partners in the US, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Welcome, to Jan Larsen Art.
